1、本届翻译大赛不收取任何费用。 2、本届翻译大赛只接受电子版投稿,不接受纸质投稿。 3、参赛译文一经发现抄袭或雷同,即取消涉事者参赛资格。 《英语世界》杂志社 2015年5月 第六届《英语世界》杯翻译大赛原文 AGardenThatWelcomesStrangers ByAllenLacy Idonotknowwhatbecameofher,andIneverlearnedhername。ButIfeelthatIknewherfromthegardenshehadsolovinglymadeovermanydecades。 Tasimple,twostorystructurewiththeboxyplan,steeplypitchedroofandunadornedlinesthataretypicalofhousesbuiltinthemiddleofthenineteenthcenturyneartheNewJerseyshore。 Hergardenwasequallysimple。Shewasnotaconventionalgardenerwhodideverythingbythebook,followingthecommonadvicetovaryherplantingssotherewouldbesomethinginbloomfromthefirstcrocusinthespringtothelastchrysanthemuminthefall。Shehadnorespectfortherulethatsaysthattallgrowingplantsbelongattherearofaperennialborder,lowonesinthefrontandmiddlesizedonesinthemiddle,withoccasionalexceptionsfordramaticaccent。 Inhergarden,everythingwasaccent,everythingwastall,andtheevidencewasplainthatshelovedthreekindsofplantandthreeonly:roses,clematisandlilies,intermingledpromiscuouslytopleasanteffectbutnoapparentdesign。 Shegrewadozensortsofclematis,perhaps50plantsinall,trainedandtiedsothattheyclamberedupmetalrods,eachrodcrownedintermittentlythroughoutthesummerbyaroundedprofusionoflargeblossomsofdarkpurple,richcrimson,palelavender,lightblueandgleamingwhite。 Hertasteinroseswasoldfashioned。Ttasinglemodernhybridtearoseorfloribundainsight。Instead,theYorkandLancasterrose,thecabbagerose,thedamaskandtherugosaroseinseveralvarieties。Shepropagatedherrosesherselffromcuttingsstuckdirectlyinthegroundandprotectedbyupendedgallonjugs。 Lilies,Ibelievewerehergreatestlove。ExceptforsomeMadonnaliliesitisimpossibletonamethem,sincethewoodenflatsstoodcasuallyhereandthereintheflowerbed,allthicklyplantedwithdarkgreenlilyseedlings。Theoccasionalpapertagflutteringfromaseedpodwiththedateandrecordofacrossshowedthatshewasanamateurhybridizerwithsomespecialfondnessforliliesofawarmmuskmelonshadeorapalelemonyellow。 Shebelievedinsharinghergarden。Byhercurbtherewasasign:Thisismygarden,andyouarewelcomehere。Takewhateveryouwishwithyoureyes,butnothingwithyourhand。 Untilfiveyearsago,hergardenwasalwaysimmaculatelytended,thelawnkeptfertilizedandmowed,theflowerbedfreeofweeds,thetallliliescarefullystaked。Butthensomethinghappened。Itknowwhatitwas,butthelawnwasmowedlessfrequently,thennotatall。Tallgrassinvadedtheroses,theclematis,thelilies。Theelmtreeinherfrontyardsickenedanddied,andwhenacoastalgalestruck,thebranchesthatfellwereneverremoved。 Witheveryyear,theneglecthasgrownworse。Wildhoneysuckleandbittersweetrunrampantinthegarden。Sumac,ailanthus,poisonivyandotheruninvitedthingsthreatenthefewliliesandclematisandrosesthatstillstruggleforsurvival。 Lastyearthehouseitselfwentdead。Thefrontdoorwaspadlockedandthewindowscoveredwithsheetsofplywood。Formanymonthstherehasbeenaforsalesignoutfront,replacingthesigninvitingstrangerstosharehergarden。 Idrivebythathousealmostdailyandhavebeentemptedtoloadashovelinmycartrunk,stopathercurbandrescueafewliliesfromthesmotheringthicketofweeds。Thelawsoftrespassandthefactthatherhousesitsacrossthestreetfromapolicestationhavegivenmethecowardicetoresisttemptation。Bgardenersandthegardenstheymakearefragilethings,creaturesoftime,hostagestochanceandtodecay。 Lastweek,theforsalesignoutfrontcamedownandthewindowswereunboarded。Acrewofpaintersarrivedandsomeonecutdownthedeadelmtree。Thismorningtherewasamovingvaninthedrivewayunloadingaswingset,abarbecuegrill,agrandpianoandahousefulofsensiblefurniture。Ayoungfamilyismovingintothathouse。 Ihopethatamongtheirnumberisagardenerwhosespecialfondnessforoldrosesandclematisandlilieswillseetoitthatallelseisputasideuntilthatflowerbedisrestoredtosomethingofitsformerself。 (选自Patterns:AShortProseReader,byMaryLouConlin,publishedbyHoughtonMifflinCompany,1983。)
