　　TheideaofanInternationalWomen39；sDayfirstaroseattheturnofthecentury，whichintheindustrializedworldwasaperiodofexpansionandturbulence，boomingpopulationgrowthandradicalideologies。Followingisabriefchronologyofthemostimportantevents：
　　1909hrInaccordancewithadeclarationbytheSocialistPartyofAmerica，thefirstNationalWoman39；sDaywasobservedacrosstheUnitedStateson28February。WomencontinuedtocelebrateitonthelastSundayofthatmonththrough1913。
　　1910hrTheSocialistInternational，meetinginCopenhagen，establishedaWomen39；sDay，internationalincharacter，tohonourthemovementforwomen39；srightsandtoassistinachievinguniversalsuffrageforwomen。Theproposalwasgreetedwithunanimousapprovalbytheconferenceofover100womenfrom17countries，whichincludedthefirstthreewomenelectedtotheFinnishparliament。Nofixeddatewasselectedfortheobservance。
　　1911hrAsaresultofthedecisiontakenatCopenhagenthepreviousyear，InternationalWomen39；sDaywasmarkedforthefirsttime（19March）inAustria，Denmark，GermanyandSwitzerland，wheremorethanonemillionwomenandmenattendedrallies。Inadditiontotherighttovoteandtoholdpublicoffice，theydemandedtherighttowork，tovocationaltrainingandtoanendtodiscriminationonthejob。
　　Lessthanaweeklater，on25March，thetragicTriangleFireinNewYorkCitytookthelivesofmorethan140workinggirls，mostofthemItalianandJewishimmigrants。ThiseventhadasignificantimpactonlabourlegislationintheUnitedStates，andtheworkingconditionsleadinguptothedisasterwereinvokedduringsubsequentobservancesofInternationalWomen39；sDay。

　　AspartofthepeacemovementbrewingontheeveofWorldWarI，RussianwomenobservedtheirfirstInternationalWomen39；sDayonthelastSundayinFebruary1913。ElsewhereinEurope，onoraround8Marchofthefollowingyear，womenheldrallieseithertoprotestthewarortoexpresssolidaritywiththeirsisters。
　　1917hrWith2millionRussiansoldiersdeadinthewar，RussianwomenagainchosethelastSundayinFebruarytostrikeforbreadandpeace。Politicalleadersopposedthetimingofthestrike，butthewomenwentonanyway。Therestishistory：FourdayslatertheCzarwasforcedtoabdicateandtheprovisionalGovernmentgrantedwomentherighttovote。ThathistoricSundayfellon23FebruaryontheJuliancalendartheninuseinRussia，buton8MarchontheGregoriancalendarinuseelsewhere。

　　TheRoleoftheUnitedNations
　　FewcausespromotedbytheUnitedNationshavegeneratedmoreintenseandwidespreadsupportthanthecampaigntopromoteandprotecttheequalrightsofwomen。TheCharteroftheUnitedNations，signedinSanFranciscoin1945，wasthefirstinternationalagreementtoproclaimgenderequalityasafundamentalhumanright。Sincethen，theOrganizationhashelpedcreateahistoriclegacyofinternationallyagreedstrategies，standards，programmesandgoalstoadvancethestatusofwomenworldwide。
　　Overtheyears，UnitedNationsactionfortheadvancementofwomenhastakenfourcleardirections：trainingandresearch，anddirectassistancetodisadvantagedgroups。TodayacentralorganizingprincipleoftheworkoftheUnitedNationsisthatnoenduringsolutiontosociety39；smostthreateningsocial，economicandpoliticalproblemscanbefoundwithoutthefullparticipation，andthefullempowerment，oftheworld39；swomen。
